Most "natural" lemon oil cleaners contain petroleum distillates. While pure lemon oil has oft been recommended to surface wipe a stock, good luck finding it. Virtually every commercial wood cleaner has additives, no matter how natural they claim to be.

In an odd way, that's part of their allure- their individual history as it were. None of my rifles are too filthy to handle, but these are military surplus rifles with years of deeply embedded grime. What do you mean by "condition the stock?" Reason I'm here is to find the best route on fixing this stock and making it good shooter because other than the cracks the rest of the rifle looks great, haven't fired it yet in fear of opening the cracks up more.Īs I am sure others will tell you, this is a preservation forum, so a great deal of caution is advised and taken in dealing with these old rifles. Good news is they are very thin and look serviceable and a couple of them look like they have already been filled in with some sort of epoxy there are bits of epoxy residue here and there on the stock like some one filled them with there hands and then touched the stock with sticky epoxy fingers. Also on the bottom of the stock at the rear tang there are two more cracks one on each side coming from the rear screw hole following the grain into the pistol grip. Another two on the top of the stock just behind the rear tang, one goes straight back about 4 inches and one is off to the left hand side about 1 inch. Then there is one on the buttstock coming from the bottom screw hole. There is a big open crack about ten inches long on the handgaurd.
